Living Systems Research

Living Systems Research is working on questions that go beyond physics, chemistry or biology. The questions "What is life?", “What is self-organization?” or “What is intelligence?” cannot be answered by these sciences alone. We seek answers to these and other questions in an broader context that involves also other fields of research including the human sciences.
Each of these questions can be only fully understood in the historical context. A holistic unterstanding can only come by combining the insights from all fields of research.

For these reasons our institute is also involved in the field of history of natural sciences, popular sciences and philosophical exchanges. In our seminars philosophical questions are often discussed in great detail. The collaboration with researchers from different fields of research is crucial to an holistic understanding of any phenomena.

So far, in the field of history of science a three-part seminar series on Alchemy (2020-2023) took place in the beautiful castle of Moosburg. In this context Florian Wodlei also prepared a three-part video series on the developement of modern chemistry starting from Alchemy (Entwicklung der modernen Chemie aus der Alchemie) that is available on our YouTube channel.

In the field of popular science the question "Can happiness be calculated?" was discussed within the Glüxakademie (the academy of happiness).

Further activities in this area are planned and will be reported here.

Seminar series on Alchemy

From 2020 until 2023 a series of three talks was given by Florian Wodlei on the "Art of Alchemy" (die Kunst der Alchemie) in the castle of Moosburg, close to Klagenfurt.

Each year another important Alchemist was the topic starting with Rudolf II (2020), Archduke of Austria to Paracelsus (2021) and finally to Isaac Newton (2023), the so-called last alchemist.

Popular science

Is it possible to calculate happiness? This is the question of a two-part series on the history of probability theory and questions like how probable it is to win in the lottery.

The first talk with the title "Lässt sich Glück berechnen?" (Is it possible to calculate happiness?) took place on september 21, 2023 in Moosburg at the Glüxakademie ("academie of happiness"). The second talk is forcasted for the spring 2025.
